Frequently asked questions

Here's how a project with me runs, from the first email to the final file.

Before you reach out

Is my project a fit, and what should I know about you?

What kinds of projects do you voice?

Commercials, corporate narration, e-learning, automotive spots and TV affiliate work. If your project sits somewhere in between, send it over and we'll sort out whether it suits my voice.

How can I hear your voice before I decide?

The demo reel on the home page has separate reels for Commercial, Automotive and TV Affiliate. Listen to the one closest to your project.

Can I get a custom demo of my script?

Yes, and there's no charge. Send me a few lines from your script and I'll record a quick read, so you can judge the voice and delivery on your actual copy before deciding.

What do you record on?

A StudioBricks XXL VO Edition booth, a Sennheiser MKH416 or Neumann TLM103 microphone and a UAD Apollo interface. It's a treated space, so files arrive clean and ready to cut into your project.

Getting started

How to send me your project.

How do I get started?

Send the script or a short description of the project through the contact form or by email at john@johnstroiney.com.

What should I include when I send a project?

The script, where it will run, roughly how long it will run, and when you need the audio. Reference reads, pronunciation notes and direction on tone are all welcome.

How do I know my script is the right length?

Time yourself reading it aloud at a relaxed, natural pace. Copy that runs long for the spot has to be cut either way, and it's easier to make those trims before recording than after.

How do I make sure words are pronounced correctly?

Names, places, brands and web addresses can be read more than one way. Add a phonetic spelling for anything unusual, and tell me how a web address should be said, such as spoken as a word or spelled out letter by letter.

Does the script have to be final?

No. A short description is enough to start the conversation. If the copy is still changing, tell me, and we can plan around it.

Rates and booking

What it costs and how it's confirmed.

What are your rates?

Rates are discussed per project and are not published. Send the details through the contact form, by email, or by phone.

What goes into a quote?

The type of project, the length of the script, where and for how long the audio will run, and your timeline. The more I know up front, the more accurate the quote.

What is usage, and does it change the price?

Usage means where your audio will run and for how long, such as a regional TV flight, online ads or an internal training course. Wider reach and longer terms generally cost more than a narrow, short-term use, so tell me the plan and I'll price it to match.

How do I book you?

Once you're happy with the quote, let me know and send the final script. For a live session, we'll pick a time that works for both of us.

Recording

How the session works.

Can you join a live-directed session?

Yes. I work with Source-Connect, Zoom and other standard tools, so you can hear the read as it happens and direct me in real time.

Do I need to be there while you record?

No. If you'd rather not attend, send the script and your notes, and I'll record and send the audio. If you want to direct, a live session is available.

Can I give direction on the read?

Yes, and it helps. Tell me who the audience is, what the piece needs to accomplish and the tone you want. Reference examples are useful too.

Delivery

When you get your audio and what it looks like.

How fast is the turnaround?

Standard turnaround is usually 24 to 48 hours depending on the length of the script, and faster when a deadline calls for it. If you're on a tight clock, say so when you send the project.

What file format will I receive?

Finished, edited audio as WAV or MP3. Need something else? Tell me which format your editor wants and I'll check what's possible.

How will I receive the files?

By email or via a file transfer service (like DropBox or WeTransfer). If your project needs a different route, let me know and we'll work it out.

After delivery

Changes, invoicing and the next project.

What if something in the read needs fixing?

I'll correct it at no charge. That covers words I pronounce or articulate poorly, a tone that wobbles from line to line, stress or vocal lift that lands in the wrong place, lines I get wrong, words cut off short, a pace that runs too fast or too slow, and mouth clicks or room noise.

What if the script itself changes?

Edits to the original copy are handled as revisions, whether it's one word, a sentence, a paragraph or the whole script. Revisions can carry an extra charge, depending on how much changes.

How does payment work?

I send an invoice once the audio is approved. You can pay by direct deposit (ACH), credit card, PayPal or check.

Can my recording be reused, or used for AI voices?

Your audio is licensed for the project and usage we agreed on. Using it for another purpose, or to create or train a synthetic or AI voice, needs a separate written agreement.

Can I book you again for future projects?

Please do. Many clients come back with new scripts, and a repeat project is as simple as sending the next script. Same contact, same quick turnaround.

Ready to start?

Send the script or a short description and I'll get back to you.
